Cover Crops
Growing organic cover crops is a great way to add nourishment to your garden soil while preventing noxious weed seeds from taking over.
There are many organic cover crop seeds available including buckwheat, grain sorghum, hairy vetch, rapeseed, white dutch clover and winter rye, as well as a number of summer and winter cover crop seed blends.
Depending on the type of cover crop seed used, some seeds have the added benefit of attracting birds and beneficial insects to your garden as well as adding nitrogen and phosphorus to your soil. Some varieties of cover crops can also help loosen hard clay soil and release nutrients that are "locked up" in the soil making these nutrients available to garden plants.
Cover crop seeds can also be used for lawns. White dutch clover can be mixed with lawn seed and can provide up to 1/3 of the nitrogen needs of your lawn.
